An Indian chile pepper variety, Bhut Jolokia, originating from Assam has been declared the world’s hottest chile pepper. The vernacular name Bhut Jolokia translates as ‘ghost chile’. The results of the study conducted by Paul W. Bosland and Jit B. Baral were published in the journal HortScience. The Indian variety beat the previous record set by the Red Savina variety.
